i used to be be seeing a democrat on the budget committee. paul ryan used to talk about the dangers of debt. we agreed on the issue. now they have blown a big hole in the debt, and if you look at their budget, the plan for dealing with that is to cut medicare by $500 billion and medicaid by over $1 trillion. >> it looks like it is going to get past the senate and house and signed by the president. is there anything more that opponents like you could have done to stop it? sen. sanders: i think we did everything that we could, but at the end of the day what you had is people like mr. mnuchin and the president who is worth several billion dollars. you had lobbyists doing everything they could to write a bill that significantly benefits the wealthiest people in this country.

the latest analysis that we have seen suggested that 72% of the benefits go to the top 5%. my guess is 60% of the benefits will go to the top 1%. at the end of the decade, because the benefits for the middle class are temporary but corporate benefits are permanent, at the end of the decade, over half of the middle class will be paying more in taxes. what we are seeing is a massive attack on the middle class. >> the administration says and republicans say that yes the tax cuts expire for the middle , its, but knowing politics seems reasonable in the way washington works. is it fair to say? go ahead. sen. van hollen: they are. -- sen. sanders: they are. the way this bill is written, the tax breaks for corporations
